Two miles north of the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport, Oregon, Nye Beach is a historical 12-block neighborhood of coastal eateries, boutique shopping, and easy beach access. Yet it’s also a quieter and often overlooked hideaway, especially in the wintertime. Whether you choose Nye Stay, Nye Beacon, or Surf & Sand (or all three) to stay in the neighborhood, there’s plenty to do on your next weekend getaway. Here are a few ideas:
- Fortify yourself for the day with coffee or tea at Ultralife Cafe. They have a breakfast and lunch menu, as does Cafe Stephanie, and both also have outdoor seating.
- Plan a visit to the Newport Visual Arts Center, (in the Nye Beach turnaround) and Newport Performing Arts Center (at the bottom of Olive Street). They are great spots to stop in to see local artists’ works and to catch a film, theater or musical performance, or even a live opera. Visit the Yaquina Arts Gallery where local artists exhibit and sell their work and are supported by The Yaquina Art Association.
- Go shopping! Stock up on handcrafted art, jewelry, antiques, toys, and home decor at shops like Peerless Puffin, and the Nye Beach Wine Cellar (with wines by the taste, glass, or bottle — one for you, one for a friend). Archway Market features local and Oregon gifts, as well as products that are ethically made by women, and supports women-owned businesses. Nye Beach Book House has an excellent and diverse selection of used and new books.
- Enjoy delicious meals! The Chowder Bowl is known for using the best quality sea clams and is only 100 yards from the beach. Nana’s Irish Pub is a favorite for Shepard’s Pie and Bangers and Mash. Nye Beach Cafe offers breakfast, lunch, and early dinner with a bounty of local and fresh produce and homemade bread & desserts. Pacific Kitchen serves Northwest fare with a casual flair, and the Taphouse at Nye Creek offers a variety of delicious menu items such as wood-fired pizzas, happy-hour favorites, 28 rotating beer and wine taps, and playful cocktails like the Nye Beach Sunset, with coconut and mango rum. Don’t forget to save a little room for a decadent cupcake or sinful truffle at the Blue Pig bakery!
